Now and Then’s journey to completion spanned five decades and is the result of ongoing discussions and collaborations among the four Beatles. The originally envisaged John Lennon demo was initially revisited by Paul, George, and Ringo in February 1995 as part of The Beatles Anthology project; however, it remained unfinished due in part to the technological challenges associated with working with the vocal recording John had made on tape in the 1970s. For years, it seemed like the song might never be finalized. Then, in 2022, a fortuitous turn of events occurred. A software system developed by Peter Jackson and his team, utilized extensively during the production of the documentary series Get Back, ultimately enabled the separation of John’s vocal from his piano part. Consequently, the original recording could be revitalized and reworked with contributions from all four Beatles. This extraordinary tale of musical archaeology epitomizes The Beatles’ ceaseless creative inquisitiveness and mutual fascination with technology. It signifies the completion of the final recording that John, Paul, George, and Ringo would create together and pays homage to the legacy of the most preeminent and influential band in popular music history.
