In a recent episode of “Felger & Mazz,” Boston radio host Tony Massarotti found himself in a controversy after using a racial slur live on air. This week, he took to the airwaves to apologize, claiming ignorance about the derogatory nature of the term he used.

During the show, while discussing baseball’s Gold Glove awards and the data that influenced them, Massarotti made a comment that included the word “z*****head” aimed at his younger colleague, Tyler Milliken, and his generation. Following the backlash, Massarotti expressed remorse in an 80-second segment on Thursday, emphasizing that his intentions were not malicious.

He stated, “I did want to address this… because during [Wednesday’s] show… I used a derogatory term that was unbeknownst to me.” Massarotti insisted that he believed he was merely poking fun at Milliken, and he failed to recognize the term’s offensive context, which has historically been directed at people of Asian descent.

Massarotti reflected, “I have since come to the realization that… there is some derogatory context for that term. Which, I assure you, I did not know.” He reiterated his surprise upon learning about the term’s connotations, asserting, “I had no idea that the word had that meaning.” He expressed clarity on the matter, pledging never to use the term again.

In this heartfelt apology, he continued by acknowledging the impact of his words, stating, “There was no intent behind it is all I can tell you when I apologize again to those who are offended.” This incident isn’t the first for Massarotti, as he has faced scrutiny before; in February 2023, he made a racially insensitive comment on-air and was suspended for it.

His recent slip has drawn mixed reactions from fans and critics alike. While many expressed understanding towards Massarotti’s apology, others have called for accountability for use of insensitive language in public discourse.

The radio host’s latest blunder highlights the importance of maintaining sensitivity in speech, especially in a world increasingly attuned to issues of race and language. As Massarotti attempts to navigate the fallout from this incident, it serves as a reminder of the power words hold and the need for greater awareness in media and communication.
