During a panel discussion at the Sundance Film Festival, France shared his journey and the impact of derogatory remarks, specifically mentioning the slur “Paki,” which he often encountered growing up in the UK. Despite his rising fame and success in the television industry, he felt that such negative experiences were far too common and continued to affect him deeply.
France now resides in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his American husband, Rob France. He reflected on a recent visit to Manchester where he took a nostalgic ride on a bus, only to be confronted by the same slurs that haunted him before he gained fame. This incident highlighted the challenges he faced in trying to find a place where he felt accepted and valued, ultimately reinforcing his decision to relocate.
While recounting his experiences, France admitted that he had initially hoped his celebrity status would lead to a change in his treatment back home. Unfortunately, that was not the case, and he reaffirmed how such prejudiced behavior persisted, prompting him to seek a happier life in the US.
Though he acknowledged that there is a vocal minority that still harbors such negative attitudes, he was quick to state that the majority of people in the UK are kind. France conveyed his pride in his Pakistani roots by taking a prominent role in Hulu’s upcoming South Asian comedy, “Deli Boys,” showcasing his commitment to promoting inclusivity and representation in media.
