In an unfortunate turn of events, NHL journalist Frank Seravalli has found himself under fire after making an insensitive remark about the late Johnny Gaudreau. The backlash has been immense, prompting Seravalli to issue an apology for his choice of words.

Seravalli had recently published an article featuring 32 bold predictions for the upcoming NHL season, in which he stated that the Columbus Blue Jackets would secure the top pick in the lottery, implying it would be “with a little help from Gaudreau.” This assertion did not sit well with fans, who were quick to express their outrage online. Despite his attempts at revising the piece, the damage was done, with many labeling his comments as “disgusting.”

In response to the ongoing backlash, Seravalli took to his social media platform, X, to convey his remorse. He explained that his intentions were not to cause any hurt or distress, acknowledging that his phrasing was poorly thought out. “What I wrote and how my poor choice of words was received was not intended to create any hurt or anger,” he stated in his heartfelt apology.

As a member of the Philadelphia hockey community, Seravalli expressed deep sorrow over the tragic passing of Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, who died in a biking accident caused by a suspected drunk driver back in August. He reflected on the grief shared by many within the hockey world, emphasizing that he never intended to sully the memory of the two brothers with his remarks. “This tragedy is a difficult topic we’re all grappling with, and what I wrote was never intended to add to that. Simply put, I should not have tied the two together. I am sorry and I promise to be better,” he stated.

Despite his apology, reaction to his words has been mixed. Some critics felt that his expression of regret was just as inappropriate as the initial comment. This incident opens up a broader conversation about sensitivity in sports journalism, particularly regarding topics that directly involve tragedy and loss.

As the Columbus Blue Jackets gear up for their season opener on Thursday, they plan to pay tribute to the Gaudreau brothers throughout the year. This acknowledgment serves as a reminder of the tragic circumstances surrounding their death and the collective grief felt in the hockey community.

Seravalli’s faux pas has sparked intense discussions about the weight of words, especially when dealing with sensitive subjects. It serves as a cautionary tale that even seasoned journalists must tread carefully, as their words hold the power to provoke strong emotions and reactions.
