Former astronaut Mike Massimino is advocating for all Americans to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections this November. His message comes in light of fellow astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who are currently stranded in space but planning to cast their ballots via absentee forms.

During an interview in New York, Massimino emphasized that being in space should not exempt them from fulfilling their civic duty. He commended both Butch and Suni for setting a commendable example by actively engaging in the voting process. “If my friends can do it from space, then all the rest of us here can certainly do it on Planet Earth,” Massimino remarked.

The two astronauts garnered attention this summer when it was revealed that they would be in space until at least February 2025, much longer than the initially planned eight days due to spacecraft issues. Despite their unusual circumstances, they have confirmed that they are prepared to vote and have already requested their absentee ballots.

Massimino praised their perseverance, stating that they are “working hard” during their extended time in orbit and doing well under the constraints. He reminisced nostalgically about the unique experience of living in space and expressed his wish to join them. “A lot of people pay a lot of money to experience this,” he said, highlighting the significance of their mission.

As Election Day approaches, Massimino’s call to action rings loud and clear: no matter where you are in the universe, participating in democracy is vital.
