Laura Govan is candidly sharing her experiences as a co-parent alongside her former partner, the well-known ex-NBA player Gilbert Arenas. In a thought-provoking interview with Carlos King, Laura opens up about the complexities of raising their four children amid the challenges stemming from their past relationships.
Reflecting on their tumultuous journey, Laura reveals, “We were never married. Our relationship today remains as it was 12 years ago, perhaps even deteriorated.” She expresses that their history continues to affect their current interactions, with Arenas allegedly using their children as leverage in their struggles. “Now, he uses the children to reach me,” she explains. “He has figured out how to manipulate the situation. It’s like he’s attacking my ability as a mother.”
Laura recounts an especially tough chapter in her life after the couple split when she and her children found themselves without a place to call home. In a moment of resilience, she chose to stay strong instead of reaching out for help. “We slept in the car for two days,” she recalls. “I felt I got myself into this mess, and I wanted to find a way for me and my kids to get out of it.”
Despite her difficulties, Laura acknowledges Arenas’s role as a father, stressing the importance of giving him the recognition he deserves. “Gilbert, play fair,” she urges. While she has never undermined his position as a father, she still believes he could be more involved, especially in their children’s extracurricular activities, such as coaching basketball. “He focuses on extravagant gifts, which aren’t necessities,” she critiques, mentioning a diamond-encrusted chain her son received and contrasting it with essential needs like schooling and proper footwear.
Although Arenas provides a monthly child support payment of $7,000, Laura argues it is insufficient to cover the essential day-to-day needs and educational expenses for their children. “They live vastly different lives, but don’t see him often. It shouldn’t be this way. Play fair! I haven’t done anything to deserve this ongoing struggle,” she implores, indicating her desire for better cooperation between them.
Laura is the proud mother of four kids – Alijah, Aloni, Hamiley, and Izela Arenas. As she navigates the challenges of single motherhood and co-parenting, her main concern remains the well-being of her children while hoping for a more balanced relationship with Gilbert.
In sharing her story, Laura not only sheds light on the intricacies of co-parenting post-breakup but also emphasizes the emotional toll such dynamics can entail. Her journey reflects resilience amidst adversity, striving to create a nurturing environment for her children while advocating for fairness from their father.
