Hollywood producer Will Packer, known for hit films like “Girls Trip,” “Think Like a Man,” and “Ride Along,” recently shared his insights on hiring practices concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). In an interview at LAX, Packer discussed the ongoing societal and political discussions surrounding DEI initiatives, particularly in light of controversial measures implemented by figures like Donald Trump aimed at restricting these programs.
Packer emphasized that his approach to hiring has always centered on selecting the best talent for each job, irrespective of race or background. According to him, the most qualified candidates frequently come from diverse backgrounds, which serves as an advantage in the competitive entertainment industry. He pointed out that many of the industry’s best talents happen to be people of color (POC), which has historically been overlooked by some in Hollywood.
Packer believes that Hollywood is often reactive rather than proactive concerning diversity issues. The industry tends to respond to broader political and societal pressures rather than leading the change. His focus remains steadfast on merit-based hiring without being swayed by shifting political climates. He worries, however, about the potential regression of DEI initiatives if organizations revert to outdated practices.
During the interview, Packer was queried about how his peers, particularly other Black producers, perceive the value of diversity in hiring. He reflected on whether they feel the same urgency to prioritize DEI and expressed concern about whether businesses would slip back into their previous habits if the political climate becomes more hostile toward DEI programs.
In light of the societal and political discussions, Packer is using his platform and experiences to advocate for a more inclusive industry and to challenge the status quo, both through his work and his forthcoming memoir titled “Who Better Than You? The Art of Healthy Arrogance & Dreaming Big,” set to be released on February 18.
Through these reflections, Packer asserts that prioritizing diversity is not just a social responsibility; it is rooted in recognizing and harnessing talent, which ultimately benefits the creative arts. By lifting voices from diverse backgrounds, he argues Hollywood creates richer stories and experiences for audiences.
