Mutombo’s family—his beloved wife, Rose, and children Carrie, Jean-Jacques, and Ryan—expressed their sorrow in a poignant statement released shortly after his passing due to brain cancer at just 58 years old.

In their touching message, the family expressed immense gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they have received globally, stating, “Your kind words and condolences during the past two years, especially in recent days, have brought us immense comfort during this difficult time.”

Besides his notable on-court prowess, the eight-time NBA All-Star was deeply admired for his humanitarian efforts both in the United States and his homeland, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, through his dedicated foundation.

Mutombo’s family is now warmly calling upon fans and supporters to consider making a donation in his honor, emphasizing that every contribution will aid the organizations and causes he championed throughout his life.

In the days ahead, they plan to hold a private memorial service for family and close friends, as well as an expansive tribute event in partnership with the NBA, further honoring the legacy of this towering figure in basketball.
