Spanish Soccer President Luis Rubiales Resigns After Kissing Scandal

Luis Rubiales is resigning from his position as the chief of Spanish soccer after facing mounting pressure due to his involvement in a kissing scandal during the Women’s World Cup.

The President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, who has held the position since 2018, publicly announced his resignation during an interview with Piers Morgan. Rubiales admitted that the backlash had become too significant to ignore.

Rubiales acknowledged that his defiance was beginning to affect others and the overall organization, making him a distraction. As a result, he decided to step down from his position. After the clip of the interview with Piers was posted, Rubiales confirmed on Twitter that he had passed on his responsibilities to the acting President.

While Rubiales maintains his innocence, he realized that trying to hold onto his position was causing more trouble than it was worth. In his statement, Rubiales mentioned that he plans to defend himself and his honor throughout the ongoing fallout. He also expressed his faith in the future and the truth.

In his lengthy statement, Rubiales stated that he plans to defend his honor amidst the ongoing controversy. This refers to the criminal complaint filed by Jennifer Hermoso against Rubiales, accusing him of sexual assault.

Spanish prosecutors have already announced that they are taking Rubiales to court for trial. If found guilty, he could face a fine and/or up to 4 years in prison.

Shortly after the incident, Rubiales apologized, claiming he got caught up in the moment. However, he later suggested that the kiss was consensual, despite Jennifer Hermoso stating otherwise.

As a result of defending Rubiales, the head coach of the Spanish soccer team was fired. The team had previously stated that they would not play unless Rubiales stepped down.
