Ricky Williams, once an exceptional NFL running back, believes he had the talent to excel in professional baseball as well. In an interview with TMZ Sports, Williams revealed that had he pursued a baseball career, he could have become an All-Star.
Before Williams made his mark in the NFL, he spent several seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies’ farm system while simultaneously playing for the Texas Longhorns football team.
As an 8th-round pick in the ’95 MLB Amateur Draft, Williams served as an outfielder for the Phillies’ rookie league and Single-A teams for four years. There is even footage of one of his early games!
In a recent interview, we asked Williams if he ever wondered how his career would have turned out had he focused on baseball. He confidently stated that he possessed the necessary skills to compete at the highest level in baseball.
“I wouldn’t say I was great, I had a lot of potential,” Williams explained. “I love to improve in everything I do. If I had dedicated myself to baseball full-time, I am confident that I could have become an All-Star.”
However, he chose football over baseball for a simple reason that many can understand.
“It’s a fantasy, but the reality is I’m the kind of person who can’t handle 162 games,” said Williams.
“Football is intense, but you have a nice offseason. That’s more suited to my style,” Williams explained.
Despite his potential for baseball, Williams ultimately found great success in football. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1998 and went on to rush for over 10,000 yards in his career.
In addition to discussing his potential in baseball, Williams also shared his dream NFL legend blunt rotation and commented on the current state of running backs in the league.
