Legendary hip-hop producer Pete Rock recently expressed his disapproval of rappers’ focus on monetary gain over the art of music.
Pete Rock took to Instagram to share his thoughts, stating, “They should change the music to WTF, tryna create a narrative that ain’t working. Pile driving the culture straight into the ground. We created real history! I don’t know what the hell they’re creating today, but it damn sure ain’t history or hip-hop, that’s a fact.”
According to the producer, hip-hop seems to have lost its integrity in the pursuit of financial gain. Despite 2023 being the 50th anniversary, it was not a stellar year for the genre, with very few Billboard number ones.
He further expressed, “We lost our integrity chasing the money. The bag has become the problem and the focal point in the culture. It makes it corny when y’all make it about money. Everyone is extra sensitive about opinions. Soon as you have an opinion you’re a hater automatically, lol. Clown sh-t. We are all out here working to make better music. Why don’t you try and do the same thing.”
