Chad Wheeler, a former Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle, has been convicted of two counts of domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend, as per Media Take Out.
The ex-Seahawks player has been found guilty of first- and second-degree domestic violence assault but not guilty of unlawful imprisonment, according to Media Take Out.
Following the jury’s determination that Wheeler “used force or means likely to result in death,” the state aims to pursue a mandatory maximum sentence of five years for the first-degree assault charge, revealed a spokesperson from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to ESPN.
Alleah Taylor, Wheeler’s former girlfriend, who is of African American descent, expressed her reaction to the verdict on Twitter, stating, “I finally have justice.”
Wheeler, 29, was apprehended in Kent, Washington in 2021 and subsequently faced charges of domestic violence assault and unlawful imprisonment related to the incident.
His trial was postponed due to his defense team’s repeated requests for expert evaluations, as reported by the newspaper.
According to charging documents, Wheeler allegedly launched a brutal attack on the victim in her bedroom and strangled her until she lost consciousness.
The victim recounted the events following the alleged assault at their Seattle-area apartment in an interview with CBS This Morning in February 2021. She described the moments after the assault and the disturbing interaction with Wheeler.
Taylor was rescued by police after sending distress messages to friends and family and locking herself in the bathroom. Upon police arrival, Wheeler reportedly began apologizing, denying the accusations with the statement, “I don’t beat women.”
Taylor sustained severe injuries, including a fractured humerus and dislocated elbow, and disclosed that the attack occurred after she refused Wheeler’s demand for her to bow to him.
