Justice Smith is proud of his new movie that features a predominantly Black cast, but he’s cautioning white people against using the movie’s full title, as it may raise eyebrows.
While at LAX, the actor was asked about his new comedy titled “The American Society of Magical Negroes,” and he jokingly suggested that whites shorten the title to simply ‘American Society.’ However, he made it clear that he was just kidding around.
The movie is about a man named Aren (played by Smith) who joins a secret society of Black people using magic to ensure the contentment of white people. The film also stars David Alan Grier from ‘The Color Purple’ and Nicole Byer from “Good Burger 2,” among others.
Interestingly, Smith’s joke aligns with one his character makes in the film’s trailer, where he suggests changing their organization’s name to “The American Society Of Magical Black People.” It seems life imitates art!
According to Justice, there’s a degree of truth in the satire portrayed in the movie, as it cleverly mocks the “magical negro” stereotype prevalent in films depicting Black characters over the years. See the trailer above for more insight.
Smith will be extensively traveling for the new movie, including attending the Sundance Film Festival where the movie is set to premiere. In fact, he has two movies premiering there this year: ‘American Society’ and “I Saw The TV Glow.”
The wide release of “The American Society Of Magical Negroes” is scheduled for March 22, so it might be advisable to purchase tickets online rather than loudly announcing the full title at the ticket window.
Just a friendly reminder!
