Jonathan Majors is clarifying his decision to repeatedly mention Coretta Scott King in relation to his personal life, citing her as an influential figure and a source of inspiration. This follows the criticism he faced after including her name in recent conversations.
In a recent interview following his conviction for assault and harassment, Majors invoked Coretta’s name, which sparked disapproval from Coretta and MLK’s daughter. Subsequently, he has responded to the backlash he received.
Majors expressed to TMZ, “My intention was to convey my utmost respect for Coretta Scott King, her accomplishments, and the profound impact she and her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, have had.”
During his ABC interview, Majors commended his girlfriend, Meagan Good, for supporting him, likening her devotion to that of Coretta’s. He expressed his gratitude for her presence in his life, stating, “She’s an angel … she’s stood by me like a Coretta. I’m incredibly fortunate to have her.”
Following his interview, Dr. Bernice King appeared to criticize Majors online, asserting, “My mother wasn’t a prop.”
Majors has voiced his profound admiration for Coretta, emphasizing her significant contributions to American and world history. He also emphasized that both he and Meagan find her to be a source of inspiration and deep admiration.
During Majors’ trial, audio recordings emerged in which he encouraged his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, to emulate figures like Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama. The recipient of these remarks was the individual at the center of the assault and harassment allegations.
Evidently, Majors continues to reference Coretta Scott King with the utmost respect. However, the reception of his tributes remains uncertain given the feedback from her family.
