Robert Glasper Claims Lauryn Hill Stole Miseducation Video

Every Hip-Hop artist uses some sort of musical inspiration in their music. However, Robert Glasper believes Lauryn Hill stepped over the line into biting. What’s worse, is it pertains to her classic debut LP. Appearing on 97.9 The BOX’s Madd Hatta Morning Show in Houston, the veteran pianist and Grammy-award-winning producer didn’t sheathe his tongue when it comes to an MC/singer whose music is beloved by the masses in multiple genres.

Glasper recalled working with Hill back in 2008. He claims that Lauryn tried to hire him for a show before then, but wanted him to audition for it, so he turned it down because he felt that if she wanted to get a taste of his talent, she should listen to his albums. But for the ’08 show, he accepted and revealed that he rehearsed for 10 hours per day for a week with the rest of a band to prepare. Apparently, according to Glasper, that wasn’t good enough for Hill, who also informed the players that they’d be receiving less in compensation than they expected.

“Every day she comes in and changes the show, changes what she wants to do. Completely. The last rehearsal, she doesn’t show up. Her manager comes in and says, ‘Lauryn [Hill is] not really feeling the way you guys have been learning the music, so we’re going to cut your pay in half,’” he says. “The last rehearsal. The day before the show. First of all, we weren’t getting paid that much anyway but understand she’s getting half a million dollars. So seriously? You’re going to take these five musicians and cut their pay in half.”

Robert Glasper subsequently stated that Lauryn has a fetish for firing bands; or at least being meticulous in trying to put together one she thinks in impeccable. “She likes to fire bands. I can rattle off 15 guys off the top of my head,” he said. “She will go on tour with a band, and in the city that they’re doing a show, she’ll hold auditions for her band. One of my boys flew to Japan to do shows in Japan. While she’s in Japan, she’s holding auditions in the hotel, in the ballroom for her band. That’s super gangsta! And nothing’s wrong. The bands are good. She gets the best musicians. She just has a thing.”

On the subject of her widely deemed classic debut LP The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Glasper says that The Fugees rapper lifted a lot of material from other musicians in making it. He also claims that the people who wrote lyrics for the album did not receive the proper credit. “She took the credit for making the classic album,” he said. “Those songs were written by other people, and they did not get their credit. She likes to take credit so she can become this super person.” He added, “The one thing you did that was great, you didn’t do.”

Also during the 40-minute interview, Robert Glasper discussed his August Greene collaborative group/album with Common and Karriem Riggs and topping the Jazz charts. The part about Lauryn Hill begins at around the 27-minute mark.
