Kenny and Kelly Fry were parents to seven children but are charged with the neglect of an 8-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, reports the Des Moines Register.
Kenneth Fry is the younger brother of State Rep. Joel Fry, a Republican who represents the 27th District. The parents face one count of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person, child endangerment causing bodily injury and child endangerment.
A neighbor suspected abuse after the two children ran to their home and banged on a door for 45 minutes begging and crying to be let in. The neighbor filed a criminal complaint in Jan. 30 and child services launched an investigation.
The other five children, however, had typical bedrooms that looked nothing out of the normal. The two Ghanian children, on the other hand, shared a room, divided by a wood panel that that had an alarm which alerted the parents if they left the room.
Once removed from the torturous home, the children told authorities they were forced to do squats and push-ups if they set off the alarm.

The empty rooms had nothing more than a plastic mat for them to sleep on, a blanket and a shelf, police reported. And there was a plastic bucket for the two kids to use as a toilet to defecate and urine in, according to the complaint.
According to a caseworker, Kelly blamed the kids and said they chose to use the buckets instead of the home’s bathrooms.
Both children were found to be malnourished and underweight by a nurse.
The children were adopted by the couple a few years ago.
The Frys posted $17,000 bond and were released from the Clarke County Jail.
